Brazil Novo Live!

posted by Lindsey to General  |  19:59:30

Friday, April 25th will be a great opportunity to revisit a most-beloved musical artist here at Roy Street, Michel Navedo! He’s coming to inspire our evening with a mixture of mellow classical instruments, samba-infused percussion, and the ambiance of Bossa Nova. Michel’s group aims to stay true to urban Brazilian style by combing cultural aspects into one musical sensation. Michel will even be singing in Portuguese. Do not miss out on this unique experience.
The group starts and 7pm so come early and claim your seat.

Cuppings Are Back!

posted by Lindsey to General  |  21:52:13

What exactly is a coffee cupping? I’m so glad you asked…

Cuppings are something we do to truly understand and identify the complexities of a roasted coffee. We are able to explore the subtle differences in aroma, flavor, acidity, body, mouthfeel, and sweetness. These sensory tours are guided by our coffee expert, Michael Ryan.

First: You get to go around the table, note color and deeply breathe in the rich aromas.
Second: You slurp as loudly and obnoxiously as possible to fully spray and coat your tongue and pallet.
Thirdly: A second time of tasting the spectrum of roasts from light to dark.
Fourthly: Discern separate identities and start to unpack the nuances in each cup.

Michael prepares up to 7 different samples and leads you around a table to try each unlabeled cup, which are prepared in triplicate (because there will be subtle changes within each cup of coffee, and these tastings are to identify consistencies as well as differences.)

What’s the point, you ask? To become more knowledgable about a product that has a deep impact on our culture today. Plus, you look cool when you can identify a coffee’s growing region by smell and taste. ;)

Cuppings are for YOU, not just for us. We have them every Monday at 11 a.m. in the Loveless Room. Come Join in the fun!

Article of Innovation

posted by Lindsey to General  |  16:57:36

Here’s a great article written about Howard, our CEO, and the innovations and changes that he has made and is continuing to make throughout the company. One of those creations is Roy Street and there is a flattering blurb about our store near the bottom of the article. If you’re interested in reading a little bit about where the future of our company is going and what we’ve gone through to get there then this article is right up your alley. It highlights our company’s strengths and settles Starbucks at the 24th rank in the world for the most innovative company.

A Great Tea Resource

posted by Lindsey to General  |  18:46:40

Our friend, supplier and tea mentor Jason C. S. Chen has written a beautiful new book called 4 Famous Chinese Green Teas: Dragonwell, Bi Luo Chun, Mao Feng, and Steamed Green Tea (A Tea Lover’s Travel Diary). And through his words and photographs you will be able to experience the entire growing cycle of a few of the most popular teas in the world.  From harvest to process and then the first tasting, Jason guides the senses through a deeper understanding of the natural wonder, beauty and ceremony of four different green teas that many of us drink daily.  Not only is this book inspiring but it is also extremely educational. The photos alone would bring the dullest of coffee tables to life. Be sure to check this out!

New Year, New Coffee.

posted by Lindsey to General  |  21:20:00

Happy New Year! How have we decided to celebrate? We’ve changed our core espresso line-up! Instead of Guatemala Casi Cielo we’ve introduced a brand new coffee; Veranda. It’s a newly-developed blonde roast created by the Starbucks team that offers nuances of crisp, juicy flavor and big body. The playful subtleties of this coffee bring a new zest and punch of liveliness to our drinks. For all of you Casi Cielo lovers out there, don’t worry; it will still be one of the weekly rotating single-origin espressos. This week, in addition to Veranda, we are featuring our Organic Ethiopia Sidamo.
