What exactly is a coffee cupping? I’m so glad you asked…
Cuppings are something we do to truly understand and identify the complexities of a roasted coffee. We are able to explore the subtle differences in aroma, flavor, acidity, body, mouthfeel, and sweetness. These sensory tours are guided by our coffee expert, Michael Ryan.
First: You get to go around the table, note color and deeply breathe in the rich aromas.
Second: You slurp as loudly and obnoxiously as possible to fully spray and coat your tongue and pallet.
Thirdly: A second time of tasting the spectrum of roasts from light to dark.
Fourthly: Discern separate identities and start to unpack the nuances in each cup.
Michael prepares up to 7 different samples and leads you around a table to try each unlabeled cup, which are prepared in triplicate (because there will be subtle changes within each cup of coffee, and these tastings are to identify consistencies as well as differences.)
What’s the point, you ask? To become more knowledgable about a product that has a deep impact on our culture today. Plus, you look cool when you can identify a coffee’s growing region by smell and taste.
Cuppings are for YOU, not just for us. We have them every Monday at 11 a.m. in the Loveless Room. Come Join in the fun!
